Mets Vs. Marlins In Game Notes

There was an article in today's Newsday about how much Rickey Henderson helped Jose Reyes in spring traing with base stealing tips. Jose might have to call his mentor after the game today because he almost got picked off twice by Dontrelle Willis.

...

Damn, Dontrelle just dominates the Mets, doesn't he?

...

Tommy G was pulled from the game down 2-0. Guess win #277 will have to wait.

...

What a crowd for today's game! Keith Hernandez said what I was thinking - reminds me of the mid '80s.

...

Wright ties up the game with a two run triple! Rightfielder Hermida should have held up on the ball instead of trying to catch it - would have saved a run at least. As they say, it's a whole new ballgame into the eighth.

...

Anderson Hernandez got his second hit of the season in the third, bringing his average up to .111, but there's still no pressure on him, as the Mets are in no rush whatsoever to activate Metsui. Instead, Hernandez continues to show chutzpah in the field, hanging in there to try and convert a double play with the runner bearing down on him. Completely unlike the way Robbie Alomar played the position for the Mets.

...

Way to go Willie for bringing in Billy Wagner in the ninth inning despite it being a non save situation. Too many managers are scared to bring in their closer except in save situations, but that's just asinine because a manager should bring in whoever is the best available pitcher at the most crucial spots in games. Kudos to Willie for giving the Mets the best chance to win. And now if Wagner can hold the Fish, the Mets will have a shot at their bullpen because Willis is out of the game after eight innings.

...

Wagner gets through the ninth unscathed, despite some uneven defense by Reyes and Hernandez. We head to the bottom of the ninth. No decision for Willis. Guess win #47 will have to wait...

...

The Marlins send a kid, Carlos Martinez, up to pitch the ninth who prior to this season had never pitched above Single A ball and the Mets make short work of the kid. They only need three batters, including a sacrifice fly by David Wright, to score a run and win the game 3-2. Off day tomorrow and then it's off to D.C.!

Lets Go Mets!
